Hydro-Québec’s Electric Circuit will install 1,600 fast terminals within 10 years

The first 22 are already installed, the next 100 will arrive this year

In line with the previous announcement, Quebec will significantly expand its DC fast charging network.

The plan contemplates 1,600 new chargers in 10 years, and Electrical circuit, Hydro-Québec’s public charging network, has already installed the First 22. The company now operates more than 1700 charging stations, including 168 DC fast chargers.

The next 100 fast chargers are to be installed in 2019. The largest stations will receive four chargers at one site. With approximately 40,000 electric vehicles registered in Quebec, the province is positioned to continue its growth.

“In June 2018, the National Assembly unanimously adopted Law to promote the establishment of a public fast charging service for electric vehicles. (This link will open a new window) The new legislation authorizes Hydro-Québec to use the revenues from increased electricity sales generated by the charges paid mainly to the homes of electric vehicle drivers to finance the installation of a greater number of fast charging stations. Electricity rates will therefore not be affected.

Hydro-Québec’s specific objectives will be as follows:

  • Put 1,600 fast-charging stations into service over the next 10 years. No less than 22 new fast charging stations have already been deployed in 2019 and a total of 100 will be deployed this year.
  • Extend the network in regions that currently have fewer fast-charging stations, such as Mauricie, Côte-Nord, Saguenay – Lac-St-Jean and Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
  • Densify the network in the busiest areas in order to eliminate waiting times in certain stations during peak hours, in particular along motorways.
  • Offer a quality, reliable service offered at the same price to all electric vehicle drivers so that they can travel easily throughout Quebec.

Over time, the installation speed of new charging stations will change depending on the following:

  • Forecast of the number of electric vehicle drivers, their location and the use of existing charging stations
  • Costs incurred by the extension of the network
  • New technologies that simplify the installation of fast charging stations
  • Our desire to ensure that the deployment of fast charging stations has no impact on electricity prices

The successful deployment is based on the collaboration between the partners who will provide the space for the new terminals, namely Desjardins, Le Groupe Crevier, Les Rôtisseries St-Hubert and Metro, as well as the Ministère des Transports du Québec, given that some terminals will be be located at rest areas.

Significant financial support from Natural Resources Canada

As part of its rapid charging infrastructure program, Natural Resources Canada selected three Hydro-Quebec projects to receive financial assistance of approximately $ 5 million. These sums will be used to finance the installation of around 100 fast charging stations in Quebec. The three selected projects involve the installation of 10 superstations with four fast charging stations, as well as the deployment of 40 fast charging stations on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River (St. Lawrence River) and 20 charging stations. fast stations on the south shore.
